PANCHKULA: Around 300 families were rendered homeless after Fatehpur Colony was demolished in a three-hour operation involving around 300 cops, 100 officials and five to six JCBs here on Friday.

Colony residents accused the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) of adopting a pick-and-choose policy during the drive, claiming a temple illegally constructed along the road was left untouched while their dwellings razed.

Residents said they used to regularly pay property tax, electricity and water bills. They claimed 59 residents had also obtained stay orders against any demolition drive and sought two more days’ time, a request that was ignored.

Huda estate officer Manav Mallik said, “There is no stay by the court and notices were already sent.” Malik said around 7 acre of government land illegally occupied was freed. He said the Huda had allotted plots to 250 people on 13 acre of land but due to illegal occupation, they could not be handed over to the allottees. Fifty of the 250 plots had been auctioned.

Fatehpur Colony along a housing society number 79 in Sector 20 was built several years ago.
