Chandigarh civic body seals four properties in three days over tax dues

CHANDIGARH: Cracking down on property tax defaulters, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation sealed four commercial properties in Manimajra in the past three days.

The list of commercial tax defaulters has been prepared and approved by officers concerned. Sources said that more such properties would be sealed in the days to come.

“All these properties were carrying Rs 30,000 property tax on their side. Though the amount was not much but defaulters were not taking it seriously. Despite multiple chances, they did not pay the amount. This did not leave any option with the authority but to seal the four commercial properties of the area,” sources said.

The authority is focusing on property tax from commercial properties. “Although recovery notices are being sent to tax defaulters of residential properties too, but sealing notices are being sent to commercial properties, as the authority cannot seal houses. Moreover, commercial properties are keeping the maximum amount with them,” sources said.

The MC has set a target of Rs 80 crore in the current financial year (2022-2023), starting from April 1. The amount also includes arrears pending with different department and authorities. It has been mentioned in the annual budget of the Chandigarh MC.
