CHANDIGARH: In a bid to revive its beleaguered IT Park residential project, the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) has once again approached the wildlife board for a clearance.

The CHB has submitted a report of a bird expert contending that the project doesn’t fall in the direct flight path of the migratory birds. It has also submitted that all care would be taken in designing and implementation of the project in this respect.

The board has already made two attempts at getting the approval for the project.

In December last year, the CHB submitted a revised proposal for approval of the National Board for Wildlife. The CHB proposal was returned by the UT wildlife department, without being forwarded to the NBW as it didn’t find justification for a fresh submission to NBW on old grounds.

T he CHB had contended that the project lies beyond 1.25 km of the Sukhna eco-sensitive zone wherein construction of new buildings and houses regulated as per existing Chandigarh Administration Building Bylaws and Architectural Control/Zoning regulations are permitted.

Earlier, the NBW rejected the project in October last year, stating that it falls in the migratory bird path. The NBW also reasoned that the waste generated along with the noise and air pollution would have deleterious effects on the sanctuary and birds.
There are three plots wherein the CHB has planned multi-storey group housing societies in its 123-acre site in IT Park.

The project site Plot 1 and 2 is 1.56 km away from the Sukhna wildlife sanctuary
. The project site Plot no. 7 is 1.52 km away from the Sukhna wildlife sanctuary. The total area falling under the protected area is around 9 hectares.

In June last year, the state wildlife board, headed by UT administrator Banwarilal Purohit, had given the clearance to the scheme. The board had also unanimously agreed to forward its proposal to the National Board for Wildlife for necessary clearance.
