North Chandigarh leads defaulter list in paying property tax

CHANDIGARH: Biggest property tax defaulters are residing in the northern part of the city, according to the municipal corporation (MC).

The civic body has sent around 2,300 notices in a majority of sectors comprising both the city’s north and south to recover over Rs 4.20 crore from defaulters till date.

In terms of dues, Sector 15 tops the list with Rs 39.86 lakh yet to be paid. Next comes Sector 8 with Rs 31.02 lakh and then Sector 22 with Rs 27.96 lakh dues.

On the other hand, maximum defaulters are found in Sector 22, with the MC issuing 229 notices, followed by Sector 8 with 154 notices and Sector 15 with 150 notices, according to the record with the MC.

Mostly, people living in these sectors are financially secure and owning comfortable homes, making it all the more surprising that they have failed to pay their dues during the rebate period given by the MC, sources said, adding if they do not pay on time, they will have to face the consequences.

Sources in the MC said residents of sectors 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11, 18 and 21 are also in the tax defaulter list and notices have been served to them in the recent past. Although the amount is varying in each sector, most of them are yet to deposit tax in lakhs to the civic body.

“Property tax notices have been sent as per records and data with the MC. All tax defaulters have been given enough time to pay the tax. Necessary action will be taken against them if they do not pay up. Some residential areas are yet to be served notices, which they will be getting in the next coming days,” said sources.
