Property tax collection system unfair: Yavatmal citizens

YAVATMAL: A delegation under the leadership of former councillors Usha Diwate and Pallavi Ramtake recently submitted a memorandum of demands to district guardian minister Sanjay Rathod criticising the property tax system of Yavatmal Municipal Council (MC).

The civic body charges 1% tax at the time of registering sale deed. Now, the MC demands additional tax one percent tax if the owner wants to register the property with the MC, else the civic body refuses to issue any certificate, the delegation pointed out.

Those in need have to deal with touts in the MC office to expedite issuance of the certificate, the delegation said adding that the civic body is also collecting 2% fine every month if the tax payment is delayed.

According to citizens, the MC has failed to provide proper civic amenities like garbage removal, parking spaces, good roads and drainage network. On the other hand, the administrator Dadarao Dolharkar is spending money on unproductive works, they said.

Farm activist Ashok Bhutada told TOI that Rathod assured to look into the matter. Bhutada demanded revocation of the tax system.

Diwate said once the elected body comes to power, the tax system will be reviewed.

A resident Sikhander Shah told TOI that the then MC chief Subhash Rai had waived off the fine if the tax dues were paid at one go. “Such relaxation should be there to improve the tax revenue,” said contact chief of Shiv Sena (Uddhav group) Santosh Dhawale and warned that a mass agitation will be launched against the “exorbitant tax collection”.

TOI has received a number of complaints against the illegal tax collection. District collector Amol Yedge said that he too has received a few complaints. According to the collector, there is provision for tax relaxation in the municipality act. He said the MC administrator would be directed to send a proposal in this regard after taking into consideration public concern. I ill send the proposal to the Urban Development Department for approval,” said Yedge.
